Our Founder
Mr. S. Rasarathinam (1890s–1970)
A Visionary Educationalist and Architect of the Hindu Board of Education
Rajaratnam was born around 4 July 1884 in Kopay in Northern Sri Lanka . Mr. S. Rasarathinam was one of the most influential figures in the history of the Hindu Board of Education and dedicated his entire life to the advancement of education, Tamil
language, Saiva cultural values, and social welfare in Sri Lanka. (Noolaham)
Inspired by the educational vision of Arumuga Navalar, he believed that education should reach every child, especially those in rural and underprivileged communities. At a time when educational opportunities were limited, he worked tirelessly to establish schools in villages across Sri Lanka, creating pathways for thousands of children to access quality education.
Mr. Rasarathinam played a leading role in the establishment and expansion of the Saiva Vidya Viruthi Sangam, which was later incorporated as the Hindu Board of Education under the Hindu Board of Education Ordinance No. 23 of 1926. The Board was established with the objectives of founding and maintaining Hindu schools, supporting education, and promoting Tamil literature, music, and cultural development.
Contribution to Education
As a dedicated educationist and administrator, Mr. Rasarathinam travelled extensively across Sri Lanka to identify communities in need of educational facilities. Through his leadership and commitment, the Association expanded its network of schools and eventually managed 187 schools before the Government takeover of schools in 1961.
His approach was based on a simple but powerful belief: every village should have access to education. He worked closely with local communities and well-wishers to establish schools even in areas with limited resources.
Establishment of Social Welfare Institutions
Beyond education, Mr. Rasarathinam was deeply committed to caring for vulnerable children. He was instrumental in developing children’s welfare initiatives, including the establishment and strengthening of children’s homes where orphaned and disadvantaged children could receive food, shelter, education, and care.
Because of his fatherly affection and dedication towards children, he became affectionately known as “Appu” among the children who received care through these institutions.
Service at Thirunelvely
One of his greatest contributions was the development of major institutions in Thirunelvely, Jaffna, including educational and teacher-training initiatives. His vision helped create an environment where children could receive not only academic knowledge but also moral guidance, cultural awareness, and life skills.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Mr. Rasarathinam served the Hindu Board of Education as a full-time worker and leader from the early years of the Association until his passing in 12 th March 1970. His life was marked by dedication, simplicity, and unwavering commitment to education and social service.
His contributions earned him the affectionate recognition of “Hindu Board Rasarathinam”, a name that reflects his lifelong association with the institution he helped build.
